Dr. Sarah Dihmes

Background

Dr. Sarah Dihmes, PhD, is a licensed clinical and health psychologist providing therapy for adults, adolescents, couples, parents, and families from diverse cultural backgrounds, sexual orientations, and gender identities. She maintains physical office locations in California, New York, Maryland, and Virginia, and also offers virtual therapy to clients located in PSYPACT-participating states, as well as California and New York, allowing for flexible and accessible care across multiple regions.

With over 20 years of clinical experience, Dr. Dihmes completed advanced clinical training at leading medical institutions across the country, including Johns Hopkins and Stanford. She earned her PhD in Clinical and Health Psychology from Alliant International University, an APA-accredited program, and completed additional clinical training at UC San Diego.

Dr. Dihmes received her undergraduate education at University of Pennsylvania and Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia.

She spent several years working within the Veterans Association, where her roles included clinical care, research, psychological evaluation, case management, and leadership. During this time, she facilitated individual and group interventions, including DBT and mindfulness-based programming, and led professional development and training initiatives. At University of Maryland Medical Center, Dr. Dihmes was selected for one of two highly competitive mental illness residency positions, training under nationally recognized psychologists. She also played a key role in helping to develop the Psycho-Oncology Department at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center.

Dr. Dihmes practices from an integrative, evidence-based framework, drawing on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), biofeedback, attachment-based approaches, and relational models. She is particularly skilled in working with teens and adults experiencing academic or workplace stress, identity development, relationship challenges, and family or social difficulties. Her work emphasizes strengthening self-esteem, emotional awareness, and relational functioning, helping clients build healthier relationships with themselves and others.

In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Dihmes has authored over 20 peer-reviewed publications in leading scientific journals, including Biological Psychiatry, Psychosomatic Medicine, and Schizophrenia Bulletin.

Dr. Dihmes provides both in-person and virtual therapy, tailoring care to each client’s unique needs while offering practical tools to support meaningful change, resilience, and long-term well-being.
